The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will continue as scheduled for the time being, despite escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following a recent military operation. Indian forces conducted cross-border missile strikes early Wednesday morning as part of Operation Sindoor, in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack in Kashmir last month that claimed the lives of 26 civilians.
Situation on the Ground: Airports Shut, Teams Affected
As the geopolitical situation intensifies, questions have emerged about the feasibility of staging IPL matches in certain parts of northern India, particularly Dharamshala, which serves as the second home ground for Punjab Kings (PBKS).
PBKS are set to host Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 8 and Mumbai Indians (MI) on May 11, but logistical complications have cast doubt on the venue’s readiness.
The Kangra Airport near Dharamshala has been shut down.
Chandigarh Airport, another key hub for teams traveling to Himachal Pradesh, has also been closed.
Reports from PTI confirm the temporary shutdown of 18 airports, including major ones in Srinagar, Leh, Jammu, Amritsar, Pathankot, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Shimla, and Jamnagar, for security reasons.
Arun Dhumal: “No Directive Yet from the Government”
Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal stated that, as of Wednesday morning, no official directive had been issued by the Indian government to suspend or postpone matches.
“We will abide by the Indian government advisory,” Dhumal said.
“Our operations team is in touch with the concerned agencies to work out logistics for Dharamshala fixtures.”
Dhumal emphasized that the May 8 match between PBKS and DC is still scheduled to go ahead as planned. PBKS, already stationed in Dharamshala, successfully hosted and won a home match against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Sunday.
Mumbai Indians’ Travel Plans on Hold
Mumbai Indians, who narrowly lost to Gujarat Titans (GT) in a last-ball thriller on Tuesday, were due to arrive in Dharamshala on Thursday. However, their travel plans are currently on hold due to the airport closures.
The IPL logistics team is actively working on alternatives, with possibilities being explored to either reroute teams or shift venues if necessary. Dhumal mentioned that backup plans are being drawn up should the situation demand a relocation of the May 11 match.
A Delicate Balance Between Sport and Security
This is not the first time the IPL has faced external disruptions. Over the years, political tensions, natural disasters, and pandemics have forced the tournament to adapt quickly. The BCCI, known for its logistical resilience, continues to monitor the situation closely.
While cricket remains a unifying force in India, the safety of players, officials, and fans remains paramount. With military tensions at the forefront, the decision to continue the IPL is being made with government coordination and constant situational assessment.
What Happens Next?
As of now:
The May 8 game between PBKS and DC is still on.
The May 11 clash between PBKS and MI may be moved if logistics don’t align.
IPL organizers are awaiting further government instructions.
All eyes are now on New Delhi, where defense and sports authorities are coordinating closely. The next few days will be critical for determining whether IPL 2025 can continue in its current form or require a regional reshuffle.
