Match-Fixing Was at Its Peak in the 90s” – Former Pakistan Captain

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has made a bombshell revelation about the rampant match-fixing that plagued cricket in the 1990s. His comments come in the wake of Pakistan’s disappointing first-round exit from the 2025 Champions Trophy, reigniting discussions about the team’s prolonged struggles in ICC events. Latif, who played for Pakistan from 1992 to 2003, has vowed to expose the truth in his upcoming book, promising to reveal the names and incidents that tainted the sport during that era.

Latif’s Upcoming Book to Expose 1990s Match-Fixing Scandals

In an interview with Sportstak, Latif announced that he is writing a book to uncover the dark secrets of 1990s cricket. He stated:

“I have started writing a book. Match-fixing was at its peak in the ’90s. I will expose everything—how fixing happened and who was involved. I will disclose what went on in ’90s cricket and also reveal which former captain submitted a presidential pardon request.”

Latif’s revelations follow former all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez’s criticism of the 1990s stars, whom he labeled as underachievers who left little legacy for future generations. Latif, however, defended his era and emphasized the need to distance the 1990s players from Pakistan cricket management.

“It took 17 years for Pakistan to win another World Cup because the ’90s players didn’t let go. Keep the ’90s players away from management and the team, then the current players will try to win. They must be tired of serving Pakistan. Let them take a step back for a while,” Latif added.

Pakistan’s ICC Woes Continue with 2025 Champions Trophy Exit

Pakistan’s struggles in ICC events reached a new low with their dismal performance in the 2025 Champions Trophy. As defending champions, having won the 2017 edition, the Men in Green were expected to perform strongly on home soil. However, back-to-back defeats to New Zealand and India saw them finish last in Group A, marking yet another early exit from a major tournament.

This disappointment follows their pre-semifinal eliminations in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup. Since their iconic 1992 ODI World Cup triumph under Imran Khan, Pakistan has won only two ICC titles—the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. Their Test cricket fortunes have also dwindled, with the team finishing at the bottom of the 2023-25 World Test Championship table and suffering a humiliating 0-2 home series defeat to Bangladesh in 2024.

A Call for Change: Can Pakistan Cricket Rebuild?

Latif’s revelations about the 1990s match-fixing scandals highlight the need for Pakistan cricket to confront its past and address systemic issues that have hindered its progress. His upcoming book could serve as a catalyst for change, urging the cricket board to adopt a fresh approach and prioritize transparency and accountability.

As Pakistan looks to rebuild, the focus must shift to nurturing young talent and creating a culture of integrity and excellence. With the next generation of players at the helm, there is hope that the Men in Green can overcome their ICC woes and restore pride to a nation that lives and breathes cricket.

For now, fans await Latif’s book, which promises to shed light on one of cricket’s most controversial eras, and hope that Pakistan cricket can rise from the ashes to reclaim its glory days.
